Children and Young People (CYP) Counselling

Children and Young People (CYP) Counselling is a specialised therapy for children and teenagers. Counsellors have additional training in child/adolescent psychology, ethics and legal frameworks.

What to Expect in a session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step — whether you’re a parent, a teen, or a young child. The Counsellor’s aim is to make those first moments feel safe, welcoming, and easy to settle into.

For children and young people, sessions often begin with simple conversations, creative activities, or playful games. These aren’t just for fun — they help build trust, confidence, and a sense of safety. When a child feels comfortable, they’re far more able to explore their feelings, worries, or experiences at their own pace.

For teens, the space is relaxed and relatable. They might talk, draw, use prompts, or explore what’s going on through everyday examples. There’s no pressure to open up quickly — the Counsellor works with the teen to build the relationship gently, with respect and honesty at the centre.

For parents, the Counsellor offers clarity, collaboration, and reassurance. You’ll be involved in a way that supports your child’s wellbeing while still respecting their growing independence.

All CYP Counsellors follow the Gillick competence guidelines, which means they consider a young person’s ability to understand and make decisions about their own therapy. This helps ensure that children and teens are heard, respected, and supported in a way that’s right for their age and stage of development.

Above all, CYP therapy is about creating a trusting relationship — one where children, teens, and families feel understood, supported, and empowered.
